Why Local Eggs Cost More (And Why They’re Worth It)

If you’ve ever compared local farm eggs to grocery store prices, you’ve probably wondered:

Why the difference?

It’s a fair question — and as a small farm in Western Washington, we believe in answering it honestly.

What Actually Goes Into a Dozen Eggs

When you buy eggs from a small farm, you’re not buying from an automated system. You’re buying from real hens, real land, and real daily labor.

Here’s what that includes:

🐓 High-Quality Feed

Feed prices have risen significantly in recent years. We choose quality layer feed because what hens eat directly impacts yolk color, shell strength, and nutritional value.

🛏 Clean Bedding & Coop Care

Fresh pine shavings, straw, regular deep cleaning, and ongoing maintenance keep our flock healthy and eggs clean.

🌧 Western Washington Weather

Our hens experience natural daylight cycles. We do not use artificial lighting to force winter production. That means egg numbers slow down seasonally — but our birds stay healthier long term.

🦝 Predator Protection

Between raccoons, hawks, and neighborhood predators, secure fencing and reinforced coops are essential investments in our region.

⏳ Daily Hands-On Work

Egg collection.

Coop cleaning.

Water checks.

Feed refills.

Health monitoring.

Small farms don’t have conveyor belts. We are the system.

Why Grocery Store Eggs Cost Less

Large retailers like Costco and Safeway operate on an entirely different scale.

Industrial egg systems rely on:

Massive flocks Automated production National distribution chains Artificial lighting for consistent output

That scale lowers price.

But it also creates distance between you and your food.

Local eggs reflect a smaller, more transparent system — one built on stewardship rather than volume.

The Difference You Can See

Fresh local eggs have:

Deep golden yolks Thicker whites Stronger shells Richer flavor

They haven’t traveled across the country.

They haven’t sat in storage for weeks.

And they come from hens raised with intention.

Supporting local agriculture isn’t always the cheapest option.

But it keeps small farms sustainable.

It strengthens our community.

And it ensures you know exactly where your food comes from.
